PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
Our regular monthly meeting for September, scheduled for this coming
Saturday, September 25, will NOT take place at Brantley’s Restaurant.
They will be closed for the coming week for repairs, maintenance, and
some down time. So we will revert back to pandemic mode and have our
meeting using ZOOM, beginning at 9:00 AM. The link to the meeting
connection is https://cravenk12.zoom.us/j/96038396148
Please try to check in several minutes early to avoid a pileup. _…_
In a slight departure from our usual agenda we will start the meeting
with our guest speaker, Dr. Jim Boehner, N2ZZ. Jim is one of three
candidates for Roanoke Division Director, and will present his vision
for the future of amateur radio and of the ARRL. Keep in mind that the
ARRL is the only organization in the country dedicated to preserving,
protecting, and promoting the interests of amateur radio. In turn, the
programs and policies of the League are determined by the Board of
Divisional Directors, who are elected by you, the ARRL members. Your
well considered vote is your opportunity to express your views on the
directions you would like to see amateur radio take. …_._ de WM3X,

MAYSVILLE HAMFEST ON SUNDAY, OCT 10TH
After not being held last year due to COVID, the HAMFEST nearest to us
is back. The Maysville Hamfest will be on Sunday, October 10th at the
Rotary Park Community Center, 704 8th Street. (If coming from New Bern
on Business US-17 turn right on 8th Street.) This year it is being
sponsored by Danny Garris, WD4CQ, and other friends of the Maysville
Hamfest. Last of the old fashioned tailgating swapfests, admission is
free. This year there is something new, a Potluck luncheon at noon.
Those partaking are requested to bring a dish to share. Talk in on
GRIFTON 146.685 Repeater (PL 88.5). Hours are 8 am to 3 pm. Door prizes
include a FT-2980R Transceiver. For more information contact Danny
Garris, WD4CQ, at 252-638-4477 or garristv@hotmail.com.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported solar activity was low during the 24 hour period ending
yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There is one NOAA reported numbered sunspot
region on the Sun facing Earth this morning. A second region is
emerging. The Prediction Center expects solar activity to be very low
through Wednesday with a chance for C-class flares. On Sunday the
observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 75. (Last Sunday it was
88.) The index is predicted to measure 75 today, tomorrow and Wednesday.
The SFI 90 day trailing average is holding at 82.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. NOAA expects
conditions to be quiet today, then quiet to unsettled Tuesday and
Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 0 reported at 5 a.m. local this
morning reflects our current very quiet geomagnetic conditions.
Even with the return to lower solar activity, we can expect good
operating conditions today on 80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, and
poor on the higher bands. HF conditions are indeed looking better. Both
entities in the DX NEWS below were workable yesterday. The VHF bands
are expected to remain quiet.
For an explanation of the numbers used in our PARSgram, see the
excellent article written by Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA at
