PAMLICO EMERGENCY/COMMUNICATIONS NET
There were 18 WinLink check-ins and 18 voice check-ins for the Pamlico
Emergency/Communications Net last Wednesday, November 3rd. There were 5
check-ins by EchoLink (KO4MHM-Brevard, K2ONN-Bermuda Run, AB1OU-Florida,
W3QA-Virginia…?, AG7C-New Jersey). Charlie K04YWM, our newest control
operator, handled the check-ins smoothly, especially the EchoLink
check-ins. Unfortunately he later had equipment problems. Mike, K4NLC,
quickly stepped in and finished out the net.
BIT BUCKET
–Bruce, K4ONC, reported he made a temporary install of the new StarLink
Mini at the Kershaw tower Saturday. It works well. This is the same type
of unit that’s now providing NC4ES network connectivity at the Arapahoe
tower via the internet. We expect it will be used to provide EchoLink
connectivity on the Oriental repeater in the future.
–More of our members, past and present, are adding EchoLink to their
tool kit. The latest is Pete Zawasky, AG7C, a member since PARS’
founding who now lives in New Jersey. Wayne, KO4OJC, used it while
vacationing in Texas a couple of weeks ago, and Mike, AB1OU, last week
while in Florida enjoying some golf.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reports that solar activity was high during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. The Space Weather Prediction Center
expects solar activity to be moderate through Wednesday with a 75%
chance for M-class flares, 25% for X-class flares. Radio blackouts
reaching the R2 level are likely for the next 24 hours.
There are 7 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this
morning. There were 3 last Monday, 7 the Monday before.
Sunday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was 176,
last Sunday’s was 123. The index is predicted to measure 175 today, 180
Tuesday and 180 on Wednesday. The more important SFI 90 day trailing
average was 151 yesterday. It was 151 last Sunday.
The geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. The SWPC expects the field be
quiet to minor storm level today, then reach major storm levels on
Tuesday and Wednesday. The planetary K-index at 7 a.m. this morning was
2.33 indicating quiet conditions.
For now, look for poor conditions during the day on 80 to 40 Meters,
good at night; good day and night on 30 to 15; good day, poor at night
on 12 and 10. As always, we recommend you go to
https://www.n4prs.org/looking-up/ for the latest observations.
