Carl, N4AA, Editor of QRZ DX/DX Magazine, states, “It is interesting
to note that the same ten places are there for both 2012 and 2013…
there are a few slight changes in ranking, but it is the same ten. That
should change somewhat for 2014 with Tromelin and Amsterdam both scheduled
for major DXpeditions.” The full list of the top 100 Most Wanted, World-
Wide, are posted to the DX Publishing Web site at:
http://www.dxpub.net/MOST-WANTED-SURVEY.html
The continental rankings are in the January/February issue of the DX
Magazine which is in the mail now. The band/mode breakdowns will be
published in the March/April 2014 issue.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was moderate during the 24 hours ending
Sunday night at 5 pm local. The largest solar event of the period was a M1
event observed at 04/2252Z from Region 1936 . There are currently 7 numbered
sunspot regions on the disk. The Sunspot count this morning is 225, a big
jump from the 119  we saw last Monday. The Solar Flux is 218, again, over a
100 points on the scale higher than in our last PARSgram. The Solar Flux is
expected to stay about the same through Wednesday.   NOAA predicts Solar
activity is likely to be moderate with a 30 percent chance for X-class
flares each day through Wednesday the 8th. Radio blackouts reaching the R1
level are expected today for areas of the Earth facing the Sun.  (R1 on the
NOAA scale means weak or minor degradation of HF radio communication on
sunlit side, occasional and brief loss (seconds) of radio contact.)

By the way, NOAA calculates the 90 day trailing average for today is 148 .
The average was below 120 six months ago as I remember.  This jump reflects
the significant increase in activity we have seen over the past several
months.  Nonetheless, comparison of these numbers indicate a historical
trend not the conditions we might see today or tomorrow.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet over the weekend. The estimated
planetary K-index at 7 am local today was zero. Geomagnetic conditions are
expected to be quiet  today, possibly raise to minor storm levels on Tuesday
and then fall back to unsettled on Wednesday. The likely cause is a coronal
mass ejection (CME) that is heading for Earth. It  should arrive late on
Tuesday. The CME was caused by a long-duration M4-class solar flare from big
sunspot AR1944 on Jan 4th.
