PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, Oct 25th, at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side or
out back. This meeting offers the annual opportunity to select PARS officers
for the new year that starts in January. We should also expect a report on
this past weekend’s Jamboree-On-The-Air activity up in Aurora. Our meetings
are held the last Saturday of each month except June when the club
participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or when in conflict with a major

ANNUAL ELECTION OF PARS OFFICERS AT OCTOBER MEETING–
LAST REMINDER
(Treasurer Gail “Wally” Wallace’s Notice of Elections of 9/27/2014 )
At the [September] PARS meeting…, it was noted that the vote
for the 2015 officers will be held at the October 2014 meeting.
A call for volunteer(s) to serve on an election committee did not
surface anyone available to undertake this effort. Therefore, Bill Olah and
I will serve as points of communication for anyone who wishes to serve in
any officer role.
At [the October 25, 2014 PARS Meeting -ed], we will select a
President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer.
Current officers respectively are Bill Olah, Randy Davis, and me, Gail
M.”Wally” Wallace.
We three are willing to continue in our current roles, and we will be
put forward for a vote at the meeting.
Please let Bill Olah or me know if you would like to have your name
presented as running for any of these positions in October as well.
We plan to take an open vote via show of hands as we have done in the
past few years. However, as stipulated in the by-laws, if any member
eligible to vote would prefer paper ballets, this request will be
accommodated.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was high during the 24 hours ending
Sunday night at 5 pm local. The largest solar event of the period was a X1
event observed at 19/0503Z from sunspot region AR 2192. It was a
long-duration X1-flare that produced a strong HF radio blackout over Asia
and Australia. The next X-flare, if one occurs, will be even more
geoeffective as the region turns to face toward Earth. It is also growing.
There is a chance (1 in 5) for X-class flares for the next three days.
There are currently 4 numbered sunspot regions on the disk. The sunspot
count this morning is 86, down 20 from the 106 reported by Spaceweather.com
two weeks ago. On the other hand, the Solar Flux Index is 173 well up from
the 128 last reported here. Those 4 regions are effective producers of
activity! The Solar Flux is expected to rise to at least 180 by Wednesday.
According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, solar activity should be
moderate through Wednesday with chance for an X-class flare each day and a
much better chance for M-class flares.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field activity was quiet to unsettled during
the 24 hour period ending yesterday afternoon. The geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet to unsettled today and quiet to active on Tuesday and
Wednesday. The K-index was an unsettled 4 at 0800 local this morning.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level are likely during the next 24 hours
according to the NOAA report.
DX CHALLENGES FOR THE WEEKS AHEAD–A TWO-FER
CHRISTMAS ISLAND, VK9X. A group of operators will be QRV as VK9XSP
from October 18 to 31. Activity will be with two or three stations
active simultaneously on 160 to 6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY.
This may include being an entry in the upcoming CQ World Wide SSB DX
contest. QSL via SP6EQZ.
TIMOR-LESTE, 4W. Jon, K7CO and a group of operators will be QRV as
4W/K7CO from October 19 to 31. Activity will be on 80 to 10 meters
using CW and SSB. This includes an entry in the upcoming CQ World
Wide SSB DX contest. QSL via operators’ instructions.
QSO CORNER
This is the place to post contacts with DXpeditions, Special Event
Stations, or special QSO’s you would like to share.
So we hope you got on HF last week. Even out by Whortonsville, the bands
were surprisingly exciting. We trust our Scouts up in Aurora were able to
work the Australian Girl Guides Station, VK2GCC, on Saturday. It was 20
over here on Friday. Other locations that were workable included Algeria on
12M, Malta on 12, Rodriques Island on 17, Peru 40M, Kenya 17M, Lord Howe
Island 10,12, and 40 plus very a weak Tokelau Island on 10. Guess they were
all getting in practice for the big CQ Worldwide SSB contest this coming
weekend. Time to clean up the connectors on that coax and fire up the rig!
Maybe you can get through the pile-up and add W1AW/KH0 in the Marianas to
your log before it closes Tuesday. Good luck.

West Virginia will be QRV starting at 0000z on October 22. They
will be active until 2359z on October 28.
