PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY
Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, July 25, at Brantley’s
Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park on the side or
out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each month except June
when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field Day or when in conflict
with a major holiday. We hope to see you all there. For more information

This month, Bill will chair a review of our 2015 Field Day activity.
Alternatives for next year will be presented. Ideas and suggestions to
improve the PARS Field Day experience will be requested. Also, the
upcoming club Fox Hunt will be discussed.
PAMLICO EMERGENCY NET (ARES) PRACTICE, A REMINDER
The Pamlico Emergency Net meets Wednesday nights at 7:30 pm local
time on the Oriental repeater (147.210 MHz, CTCSS/PL tone 151.4, standard
offset) or if unavailable on the alternate frequencies in the following
order:
145.230- (85.4 PL tone) Grantsboro (Reelsboro)
146.550 simplex
Stick around for the rag chew after check-ins and announcements.
Again, if you haven’t already done so, it’s time to exercise your generator.
Thirty minutes under load once a month is recommended during the season,
once a quarter otherwise.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local. The largest recent solar event was a B6 flare
observed at 0452Z this morning. There are 4 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk facing Earth. None are very active. The sunspot count this morning is
46, even lower than the limp 59 reported by NOAA a week ago at this time.
The Solar Flux Index (SFI) is 99, well down from the 116 in our last
PARSgram. The forecast shows the SFI staying about the same, 100 today and
then around 105 by Wednesday. According to the Space Weather Prediction
Center, solar activity is expected to be very low through Wednesday with
only a slight chance (10%) for M-class flares.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet over the weekend. However, a
magnetic filament that was snaking across the Sun exploded yesterday giving
off a Coronal Mass Ejection. The CME may reach the Earth on July 23
resulting in a geomagnetic disturbance and auroras for our polar regions.
Radio noise for us may increase slightly. The Earth’s geomagnetic field is
expected be quiet to active today, unsettled Tuesday and then quiet on
Wednesday before the CME arrives, if it does. The Kp-index was reported
by NOAA to be a quiet 2 at 0800 local this morning.
The VHF bands were very quiet this past week. This brought disappointment
for those hoping for many contacts during this weekend’s CQ Worldwide VHF
Contest. Our string of active Sundays on 6 Meters was broken. Let’s hope
there is some life left in the Magic Band this season.
