PARSgram 2015-09-07

THANK YOU LARRY!
Larry Wall, KK4SEO, as most of you know, took on the task several years ago
to build a website for the Pamlico Amateur Radio Society. Thanks to Larry,
the site has become a wonderful resource for our members and guests. Well,
we just found out that Larry and his wife have headed for the hills…
literally. They recently moved from Oriental to the mountains of Western
North Carolina. He reports that he is now hard at work on his honey-do list
getting an old house and property ready for winter. Fortunately for PARS,
Larry will keep an eye on things from afar as time permits, at least for a
while. Greg Wadsworth, KM4DZM, our Publicity Chair, has picked up the
editorial and day to day administrative tasks. So Larry, we appreciate and
thank you for your most significant contribution to PARS. We will miss
seeing you around town and at our meetings but it is good to know you will
be keeping up with your friends. We wish you well. (You can reach Larry at
252-639-0980 or larry@barefootlogic.com).

FOX HUNT COMING SOON
Our first FOX HUNT will be held on Saturday, September 19th. Check-in will
be at the rear of Brantley’s Restaurant in Oriental at 9:30 am. This is an
open event for all hams in the area. The fox will run from 10 am to 11:30
am. A buffet lunch will be provided at Brantley’s around Noon courtesy of
PARS for all participants. A new Yaesu FT-60R Dual band HT will be awarded
to the first hunter to touch the FOXmobile. The FOX Frequency will be
146.590 MHz. (A last practice session will be conducted on Saturday,
September 12th–see calendar below.) Questions? For more info contact Bill
Olah, KR4LO, 249-0287, w_olah@yahoo.com or Randy Davis, K4WRD, 249-1680,

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local. The largest recent solar event was a B1 flare
observed at 0001Z this morning. There are 3 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk facing Earth. The sunspot count this morning is 38, down from the 50
reported by NOAA a week ago at this time. The Solar Flux Index (SFI) is also
down to 85 from 92 reflecting the decrease in solar activity. More
important, the 50 day moving average SFI is down to 110. The NOAA forecast
shows the SFI staying about the same at around 85 through Wednesday.
According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, solar activity is expected
to be very low for the next three days with a slight chance for C-class
flares.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to active over the weekend with
increased solar winds. The Earth’s geomagnetic field is expected be quiet to
active today, quiet to unsettled Tuesday, and decline to quiet levels on
Wednesday. The Kp-index was reported by NOAA to be a quiet 3 at 0800 local
this morning.

The Sun was not always this quiet. Tad Cook K7RA in his Propagation Forecast
Bulletin 36 reminds us that 156 years ago this past week, on September 2,
1859 the huge Carrington Event occurred, the monster geomagnetic storm in
which a billion ton CME smashed into Earth setting fire to telegraph
stations around the world. He said to check http://www.spaceweather.com
using the archive feature in the upper right corner of the site to select
September 2, 2015.

THIS WEEK’S DX CHALLENGE
ISLE OF MAN, GD. Members of The DX Interceptors are QRV as MT0IXD
during September. Activity is on 20 to 10 meters using CW, SSB and
various digital modes. QSL via operators’ instructions.
