SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local.  That ended at 0029Z this morning, April 18th when
AR2529 erupted producing a M6.7-class solar flare. According to
spaceweather.com, a pulse of UV radiation from the flare ionized the top of
our atmosphere. This, in turn, disrupted shortwave radio communications over
the daylit side of our planet. Mariners, aviators, and ham radio operators
around the Pacific Ocean may have noticed fading signals at frequencies
below ~15 MHz.”  A NOAA blackout map  at
http://www.spaceweather.com/images2016/18apr16/blackout.png?PHPSESSID=c7197m8jennemn7kdtghpl3ru2
shows the frequencies and territories affected. The Earth’s geomagnetic
field may feel the impact of any coronal mass ejection related to the flare
early Tuesday.

There are two numbered sunspot regions on the disk facing Earth. AR2529 is
about to rotate off the face so it’s impact should diminish.  The sunspot
count this morning is 35, up a few from the 26 reported by NOAA last week.
The Solar Flux Index (SFI) was 102 yesterday at noon, down from the 111
reported a week ago. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, solar
activity is expected to continue to be low for the next three days with a
chance for M-class flares. The NOAA forecast has the SFI staying about the
same today and Tuesday and drop to 95 on Wednesday. The 90 day trailing
average is 99, up one from last week.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field activity was quiet to active yesterday. The
field is forecast to be quiet to active today and tomorrow and then quiet on
Wednesday. Most of this activity is caused by the Earth entering a stream of
high-speed solar wind  flowing out of a large coronal hole on the sun: The
Kp-index was reported to be a quiet 1 at  8 a.m. local this morning. No
space weather storms are predicted for the next 24 hours.

No change in band conditions. Continue to expect fair conditions on 30 and
20
Meters and fair to poor on the higher bands. Good conditions should continue
for 40M at night.  DXmaps showed increased activity on 6M yesterday but it
was again a mixed bag of TEP, meteor shower, and tropo propagation with only
a couple of E-skip contacts reported yesterday. There was no propagation
enhancement evident last Monday evening for the first of this Spring’s VHF
Sprints.  Only three 2 Meter SSB stations were logged from Whortonsville,
all within Eastern NC. One of those was PARS member, “Cedar Island Mark,
K1MAP.
