Memorial Day is one of those holidays marked by mixed joy and sadness.
We welcome the arrival of the the summer season and all the fun it
brings, yet we remember and mourn the loss of those who made it
possible. _…_ With the governor easing the covid19 restrictions
somewhat many are taking advantage of the reopening of restaurants.
While Brantley’s is reopened for inside dining the PARS officers have
decided NOT to hold the May meeting there. Rather we will continue with
our net format meetings using the Oriental repeater. The main reason
for this decision was to protect our members who are over age 65, a high
risk group independent of their current health status. _…_ I will
again be assuming the duties of net control using the club call N4PRS,
and will be transmitting from the Florence Whortonsville fire station.
With me will be three PARS VE’s, and four of my license class students
who will take their Technician class exams immediately following the
meeting. Prior to the meeting they will assist in setting up the
station on site, and during the introductions will get a chance to say a
few words as guests of PARS. It will be a big day for them! …_._ de

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hours
ending yesterday at 5 pm local. There are no sunspot regions on the Sun
facing Earth this morning. This is our 23rd day in a row without–the
Minimum continues. Solar activity will continue to be very low through
Wednesday according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. On Sunday,
the reported Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 69. The index is
predicted to register 70 today through Wednesday. The SFI 90 day
trailing average is also 70.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. It is
expected to be quiet today, tomorrow and Wednesday. The estimated
Kp-index of 2 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning indicates we are
currently experiencing quiet conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions on 80
and 40 meters. Expect poor conditions on the higher bands. DXmaps has
been showing lots of opportunities for DX on 6 meters this week. Being
the “magic band”, there is no pattern as to when openings will occur or
to where the clouds will take us. As I write this on Sunday evening,
Southeast stations are working into the lower Midwest, upper Midwest
stations working Hawaii, and Central California stations working into
lower Alaska and Canada.
