PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
Effective on June 29, 2021, amateur radio licensees and candidates must
provide the FCC with an email address on all applications. If no email
address is included, the FCC may dismiss the application as “defective.”
Revocation of the station license or suspension of the operator
license may result when correspondence from the FCC is returned as
undeliverable because the grantee failed to provide the correct email
address. I’m trying to decide if this is a good idea or not. The
advantage of using email to communicate with applicants and licensees is
speed, since emails usually travel through cyberspace to a destination
server in a matter of seconds or minutes. One concern I have is what
happens next. My service provider separates my incoming emails into
spam, promotional, etc., categories. Since I rarely check my spam
folder, important but mischaracterized emails may not be read in a
timely manner or even at all. Some services reject emails for no
apparent reason. Another concern is security of the email addresses on
file with the FCC. Are licensees going to be bombarded with email ads
for radio related goods and services? It is for reasons like these that
a lot of people are very reluctant to give out their email addresses.

PARS VIRTUAL ZOOM MEETINGS
We expect to have very interesting PARS meetings this and next month. As
Bill announced last week, we will be joined by Bob Heil, K9EID, of Heil
Sound this month. Next month, Marv Hoffman, WA4NC, our ARRL North
Carolina Section Manager will be with us. If you haven’t already become
acquainted with “Zoom” you have time to do it. You can start by going to
zoom.us, click on resources and watch some of the video tutorials. Of
course, as long as you use Chrome, Firefox, or most any other browser,
you can just jump in: click on the meeting link in the PARSgram and
follow the directions. We expect we will use the same meeting link and
ID used for the past four PARS meetings. Instructions will be repeated
in the next PARSgram. The regular business meeting will run from 9 to 10
am followed by a break from 10 to 10:15 for check in by those wishing
only to see Bob’s presentation. It will start at 10:15 am.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 pm local. There are no numbered sunspot regions on
the Sun facing Earth this morning. We are in a stretch of spotless days.
This is our eighth in a row. On Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index
(SFI) at Penticton was 73. Solar activity is expected be very low
through Wednesday. The index is predicted to register 74 today, Tuesday
and Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is 85, up one from last
Monday.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. It is expected to be
quiet to unsettled today, and then quiet Tuesday and Wednesday. The
estimated Kp-index of 2 reported at 7 a.m. local this morning indicates
we are currently experiencing quiet geomagnetic conditions.
For the next several days, we can expect fair daytime and good nighttime
operating conditions on 80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, and poor on
the higher bands. DX Maps is showing some 6M Es and Tropo activity (FT8
and SSB) this morning.
