PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX

Had a wonderful trip to western New York to visit the grandkids.

Rochester did not disappoint…we had a couple of inches of snow while

we were there.  _…_  There is an interesting article on the ARRL

webpage on the mode usage on the amateur bands for the calendar year

  1. For the first half of the year, most of the activity was split

between CW and phone, with CW having a slight edge over phone.  RTTY and

PSK showed very little activity.  Then about mid-year FT8 showed up.  By

the end of the year FT8 accounted for about 65% of amateur activity.

Phone and CW were still in evidence but both had dropped.  RTTY and PSK

activity remained low. I guess I’ll have to get going on FT8.  …_._ de

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reported solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are no numbered sunspot regions

on the Sun facing Earth this morning. Solar activity is expected to

continue to be very low through Wednesday. On Sunday the observed Solar

Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 73. (Last Monday it was 70.) The index

is predicted to register 72 today, Tuesday and Wednesday. The SFI 90 day

trailing average is still 76.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. NOAA expects

conditions to be quiet today and Tuesday, quiet to unsettled on

Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1 reported at 5 a.m. local this

morning reflects our current quiet geomagnetic conditions.

For the next several days expect fair daytime and good nighttime

operating conditions on 80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, poor on the

higher bands. No change from last week.
