PRESIDENT’S SOAPBOX
This is the last PARSGram before Field Day so I wanted to make some
comments on what our members could do to help the club score. I will be
operating my home station using the club call, N4PRS. The station will
operate in class 1D, i.e., one transmitter on at a time, and using
commercial power. Any club member can stop by and operate or help with
keeping the log. Operations will be on both phone and CW, and on 80/75,
40, 20, 15, and 10 meters. I’m also hoping to have an educational
session, an introduction to FT-8. Club members are also encouraged to
operate from their home stations. These individual operators can
generate points by making QSO’s and by picking up bonus points of their
choosing. Check the Field Day rules for bonus points that may be
appropriate for your home operation. When you submit your score you
will be able to pool your score with the club score to form an aggregate
score. Last year our aggregate score of 3,848 was one of the highest
scores PARS had in recent memory, and that with only a total of five
submissions. If we could get as many members operating as we get to
show up for breakfast at Brantley’s we could easily break 6,000 points.
Looking at last year’s aggregate club scores, that is a very reachable

OPERATING FROM HOME ON FIELD DAY?
Just like last year, for Field Day 2021 aggregate club scores will be
calculated and published in the December QST. Field Day participants can
include a single club name with their reported results. Please list your
club affiliation as “Pamlico Amateur Radio Society, LTD” when you send
in your score. Be careful, the club in little Washington has a similar name.
SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There is one numbered sunspot region
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. The Prediction Center expects
solar activity to be very low through Wednesday. There is a chance for a
C-class flare each day. On Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at
Penticton was 76. (Last Sunday it was 69.) The index is predicted to
reach 78 today, Tuesday and Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average
is 76.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. NOAA expects
conditions to be quiet through Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 1
reported at 5 a.m. local this morning reflects our current quiet
geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect fair daytime and good nighttime operating conditions today
on 80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, and poor on the higher bands.
Conditions should improve slightly tomorrow. The six meter band has
remained active all week with some E-layer skip reported each day. As I
write this, at 7 am Monday DXmaps showed several East coast stations
reporting multi-hop contacts with stations in England, Isle of Man, and
Spain. By 8 am Florida stations are working into Eastern Europe.
