PAMLICO COMMUNICATIONS TEAM MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY, JAN 8
The Pamlico Communications Team (PCT) will meet on Saturday at 0900
hours at the Florence-Whortonsville VFD. On the agenda is a close out
discussion on the recent COMMEX. The role of the stay-at-home operator
during emergencies will be covered. All hams are welcome. The firehouse
is at the intersection of Florence and Sanders Roads in Florence. For

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported solar activity was low during the 24 hour period ending
yesterday at 4 p.m. local. There are 2 reported numbered sunspot regions
on the Sun facing Earth this morning. We had 5 last Monday. The
Prediction Center expects solar activity to be very low today through
Wednesday. There is a chance for C-class flares. On Sunday the observed
Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was 89. (Last Sunday it was 125.)
The index is predicted to measure 88 today and tomorrow and then 85 on
Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average is 93.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. NOAA
expects conditions to be quiet to unsettled again today and then quiet
Tuesday and Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 3 reported at 7 a.m.
local this morning indicates quiet geomagnetic conditions.
We can expect fair day and good nighttime operating conditions today on
80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, and poor on the higher bands. Those
are the “official” short term predictions. Personal experience has been
that the 15 Meter band has been open every afternoon that I’ve checked
during the past month and 12 Meters has been active too. Here again,
most activity was FT-8. Propagation on six meters is hit and miss. The
Winter Es season has arrived but again we in the Southeast seem to be in
a black hole. Reportedly, weather induced ducting has produced some long
distance contacts recently on 2 meters.
