HAMS ON PARADE

Well, not quite. Seen in the CroakerFest 2022 Parade were a few of our

PARS folks, all making some noise on the Pamlico Repeater: Charlie,

WA4GSI, towing the Oriental Dragon; Mike, K4HPS, on his motorized cooler

with the other Shriners; THE N4PRS TRACTOR with Paul, K4MMB, at the

wheel; and Gary, NC3Z, driving the big Florence-Whortonsville VFD fire

truck. Down home all the way. Who did we miss? Our favorite annual

parade just gets bigger and better.

After the parade, Paul set up next to the river near the festival

grounds to advertise PARS ham radio and made a bunch of contacts from

his antique rebuilt Jeep CCJ. A few photos may (or may not) be found on

the N4PRS.org “What’s Happening” page.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reported that solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are 3 numbered sunspot regions

on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 2 last Monday. The

Prediction Center expects solar activity to be very low through

Wednesday with a slight chance for C-class flares.

At noon yesterday, the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was

  1. Last Sunday it was the same, 102. The index is predicted to measure

110 at noon today, 112 Tuesday and 112 Wednesday. The SFI 90 day

trailing average is down to 126. Last Sunday it was 129. Appears our

propagation is taking a bit of a dip.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled yesterday. NOAA

expects conditions be quiet today, quiet to active Tuesday, then

unsettled to active on Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 4 reported

at 5 a.m. local this morning indicates current quiet geomagnetic conditions.

We can expect fair day operating conditions today on 80 to 40 meters,

good fair to good on 30 and 20, fair on 15. Conditions are likely to be

fair to poor on 12 and 10. The magic band, six meters, has been taunting

us with European dX. Openings into the Midwest continue. On 6M FT8,

watch for ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON, FP. These islands just south of

Newfoundland, even today, are still part of France. KV1J should be there

through July 12 as FP/KV1J.
