SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was high during the 24 hour period
ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. The largest solar event was a M-6
flare. There are 9 numbered sunspot regions on the Sun facing Earth this
morning. There were 6 last Monday. The Prediction Center expects solar
activity to be moderate today through Wednesday with a chance for
M-class (55%) flares and a slight chance for X-class (15%) flares.
Yesterday’s noon Solar Flux Index (SFI) observation at Penticton was
- Last Sunday’s was 184. The index is predicted to measure 235 today,
230 tomorrow and 225 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average was
141 yesterday. It was 135 last Monday.
The Earth’s geomagnetic field reached minor storm levels yesterday. It
is expected to be quiet to unsettled today and Wednesday and quiet on
Tuesday. The estimated Kp-index of 3 reported at 7 a.m. local this
morning indicated quiet geomagnetic conditions.
For today, we can expect poor day and fair to good operating conditions
on 80 through 20 meters and good day and fair to good on 17 through 10.
The 10 meter band was chock-a-block full of signals with good DX deep
into Europe at a little after eight this morning. If your radio goes
quiet today, don’t be too surprised. There’s a possibility for a short
HF blackout (R1) according to the SWPC. There were several yesterday.

– CROZET ISLAND, FT/W. Station FT8WW is QRV until January 26. QSL via
OQRS/LOTW.
– THAILAND, HS. Jack, F5LIT will be QRV as HS0ZPU from January 17 to
February 6. From January 17 to 20, he will be active from Krabi
Island, IOTA AS-053. QSL direct to home call.
– PAPUA NEW GUINEA, P2. David, VK4FABN is QRV as P29DT from Tabubil
in the Star Mounts in the North Fly District of the Western
Province. Activity is holiday style on 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters
using CW and SSB. QSL via LoTW.
– PALAU, T8. Operators Mike, JA6EGL, Kuzo, JH6WDG, and Mune, JR6DRH
are QRV as T88SM, T88AQ, and T88RH, respectively, from Koror Island,
IOTA OC-009, until January 19. Activity is on 160 to 6 meters using
CW, SSB, and various digital modes. QSL to home calls.
