PARSgram 2015-10-19

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PARS OFFICER IN 2015?
DO YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE THAT WOULD?
If you are interested in running for the office of President, Vice
President, or Treasurer, or wish to RECOMMEND A MEMBER  for one of those
offices, please reply to this PARSgram or to President Bill Olah KR4LO,
249-0287or w_olah@yahoo.com. Officers are to be elected at the October
meeting. Willing incumbents are Bill Olah for President and Wally Wallace
KK4ASP (as bookkeeper/treasurer).  To remain viable, PARS needs folks
willing to serve as officers. You will have plenty of help.  Please consider
serving.

FALL TERM SCHOOL CLUB ROUNDUP
This is the week for the Fall 2015 School Club Roundup, October 17-23.  In
both the Fall and Spring, this effort of the ARRL fosters contacts with and
among school radio clubs be they at the elementary, middle, high school or
college level.  Non-school clubs and individual Amateurs are always
encouraged to participate.  This is a great opportunity to talk with and
encourage young folks and promote interest in the hobby.  Complete
details can be found at  http://www.arrl.org/school-club-roundup  Spend a
little time talking with the kids this week.  It’s fun…..

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY
NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hours ending
yesterday at 5 pm local.  The largest recent solar event was a C1  flare
observed at 0206Z this morning. There are 5 numbered sunspot regions on the
disk facing Earth. The sunspot count this morning is 81, almost 50 above the
low 36 reported by NOAA last week. The Solar Flux Index (SFI) is 120, nicely
above the 85 we reported here last week. That’s well above the 90 day
trailing average of 102. The NOAA forecast has the SFI rising just a bit to
125 for today through Wednesday. According to the Space Weather Prediction
Center, solar activity is expected to be moderate for the next three days
with a 50/50 chance for M-class flares,

The Earth’s geomagnetic field varied from quiet to minor storm levels over
the weekend. The northern latitudes were favored by bright auroras reaching
as far south as Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Montana Sunday morning. Expect
quiet to active conditions today and Wednesday, quiet to unsettled on
Tuesday.  The Kp-index was reported to be a quiet 1 at 0800 local this
morning.

Your best chance for DX is to be found on the 30 and 20 Meter Bands and then
40 Meters at night. The higher bands, 17-10 Meters, were active yesterday
afternoon with most activity into the southern latitudes.  South African
stations were strong.  Conditions should be good for this week’s challenge.

THIS WEEK’S DX CHALLENGE
FERNANDO DE NORONHA, PY0F.  Operators Ron, AA4NC, Will, AA4VK and
Murray, WA4DAN will be QRV as PY0F/home call, respectively, from
October 18 to 28.  Activity will be on 160 to 6 meters using CW, SSB
and RTTY.  This includes being active as PY0F/AA4NC in the upcoming
CQ World Wide SSB DX contest as a Single Op/All Band entry.  QSL via
AA4VK.

Just so you know, from Wikipedia,  Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago of
21 islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, 354 km (220 mi) offshore from
the Brazilian coast. The main island has an area of 18.4 square kilometres
(7.1 sq mi) and had a population estimated at 2,718 in 2012. The area is a
special municipality of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco  with about 70% of
it established in 1988 as a national maritime park. In 2001 UNESCO
designated it as a World Heritage Site because of the importance of its
environment.

QSO QSO CORNER
This is the place to post contacts with DXpeditions, Special Event
Stations, or special QSO’s you would like to share.

My question was answered– Sam/Dave KD2T responded quickly with this about
the Chesterfield DXpedition:  “Dick (JJW) got the TX3X  I think twice. I
tried for hours with no luck. As I  told Dick I hope someone goes back there
before my 125th birthday.”  Thanks Dave.  Anybody else make it?

And Mike Hurm found life on 12 Meters last Monday: “Just made a contact on
South Cook Islands on 24.945/24.950 MHz (split).  E51MKW.  One for the log
books!:”  and then again Tuesday on 15 Meters…”Now just contacted South
Cook Island EM5MQT on RTTY split 21.085/21.086.  Having fun now!  Mike Hurm
K4HPS.

Good to hear some folks are breaking the silence here in the County!

DX EXPERIENCE
We’re trying something new courtesy of Jamie, KJ4JK. Every few weeks we’ll
put up a new “experience”. You might learn something new and then have fun
if and when you make the contact. Here’s the first one:

The most expensive city in the world to live in–Singapore.
This city has recently beat out Tokyo, Japan, for the title of “most
expensive city” for 2014.  Cars can cost between 4-6 times as much in
Singapore from what they cost in the US or UK  … (for example, a Toyota
Prius actually costs about $150,000.00 there).

If you make successful contact, call or email Jamie King KJ4JK and he’ll put
you on the eligible list for the prize.
mailto:kj4jk@arrl.net or telephone 249-1549. (20151012)
