PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY

Our next meeting will be at 0900 this Saturday, December 18th at

Brantley’s Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park

on the side or out back. Our meetings are held the last Saturday of each

month except June when the club participates in the annual ARRL Field

Day or when in conflict with a major holiday. This one was, so it’s

being held one week early. We hope to see you all there. For more

information contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Mike Marsh,

K4NLC, 252-636-1257 or mike@marshconsulting.com.

For our final gathering of the year the business agenda will be short

and followed by our completely voluntary–and often full of laughs–

annual exchange of small gifts. If you wish to participate, the gifts

must be related to ham radio in some way. No cans of Spam or Ham please!

Put your imagination to work. Check out your junk box, look around your

shack for stuff that works but you no longer need.  See what you can

find then wrap it and bring it to the meeting. If you buy something, it

really should not exceed $10 or so in value. Exchange your gift for a

number. After your number is called, go through the pile of gifts and

pick one . Open it to oohs and aahs as others await their turn.  If you

already have a widget like the one you unwrapped, swap it for something

else. It’s fun!  See you at the meeting on Saturday, December 12th, 9

am, in the back room of Brantley’s Village Restaurant in Oriental. This

a family affair. Spouses and kids are invited to join us for breakfast

and the fun. Of course, there is no need for them to bring a gift to

exchange. And if you couldn’t find something or perhaps this is not your

thing, not to worry, you won’t be alone so come anyway, eat and watch

the show.

After the meeting there will be a hotwash/review of the recent Regional

Functional Exercise as seen by members of our Pamlico Communications

Team. This was the first such exercise of emergency communications in

ENC involving medical/hospitals, public service agencies, and ham radio

auxiliary communicators with some of those operating at home. They were

all responding to “Hurricane Frank”.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reported solar activity was very low during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 4 p.m. local. After three days with none, there is

one reported numbered sunspot region on the Sun facing Earth this

morning. It is stable. The Prediction Center expects solar activity to

be very low today through Wednesday with a slight chance for C-class

flares. On Sunday the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was

  1. (Last Sunday it was 83.) The index is predicted to measure 80 today

and tomorrow and then 82 on Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average

is down one to 86.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field was quiet yesterday. NOAA expects

conditions to be quiet to unsettled today, quiet Tuesday and then quiet

to active Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of 2 reported at 7 a.m.

local this morning reflects our current quiet geomagnetic conditions.

We can expect fair day and good nighttime operating conditions today on

80 and 40 meters, fair on 30 and 20, and poor on the higher bands. Six

meters is expected to remain quiet.
