PARS BREAKFAST MEETING THIS COMING SATURDAY

Our next meeting will be at 0900 Saturday, October 29th at Brantley’s

Village Restaurant on Broad Street in Oriental. Please park along the

side or out back. We hope to see you all there. For more information

contact Pamlico Amateur Radio Society President Mike Marsh, K4NLC,

252-636-1257 or mike@marshconsulting.com.

Expect to hear a lot about repeaters at the meeting. Also, challenges

with setting up a C4FM WiresX node: the stuff they don’t tell you.

Don’t forget about the monthly drawing for a Brantley’s Restaurant gift

certificate. Bruce says you have to be at the meeting to win!

CHANGE

From Dick Goodwin, K4JJW:

Traditional amateur radio has made some startling changes during the

past 5 years. Here’s a recent up-date from Club Log showing the various

operating modes as a percent of total QSOs.  Club Log has an extensive

data base of millions of QSOs from thousands of logs routinely uploaded

to their system.  The following numbers compare 2016, the last year

before digital FT-8 was introduced, to 2022.  The transition to FT-8 is

amazing and clearly explains why we seeing sparse activity on the CW,

SSB, and RTTY bands compared to 5 years ago.  The rapid conversion to

FT8 compares closely to the changes from Spark to CW and AM to SSB

during the 1920”s and 1960’s:

YEAR        CW       FT-8       PHONE        RTTY       PSK      OTHERS

2022        16.9%    60.7%      13.7%        2.7%       0.19%    5.8%

2016        46.2%     0.0%      38.9%       10.2%       4.69%    0.0%

The only thing that doesn’t change is change.

SOLAR NUMBERS TODAY

NOAA reported that solar activity was low during the 24 hour period

ending yesterday at 5 p.m. local. There are 5 numbered sunspot regions

on the Sun facing Earth this morning. There were 4 last Monday. The

Prediction Center expects solar activity to be very low with chance for

C-class flares today through Wednesday.

At noon yesterday, the observed Solar Flux Index (SFI) at Penticton was

  1. Last Sunday it was 119. The index is predicted to measure 104 at

noon today, 100 Tuesday and Wednesday. The SFI 90 day trailing average

was 127 yesterday, the same as last Sunday.

The Earth’s geomagnetic field reached active levels yesterday. It is

expected to be quiet to minor storm levels today then be quiet to active

Tuesday and the back to quiet on Wednesday. The estimated Kp-index of

2 reported at 5 a.m. local this morning indicated quiet geomagnetic

conditions.

We can expect fair to good operating conditions on the HF bands 80

through 20, fair on 17 and 15, and poor on 12 and 10 meters.

20M Propagation remains good this morning- 2606 Miles per watt

VK5MN PF95 10426 Miles @ 4 Watts FT8 on 20M at 1137Z/23 Oct using a QDX

SDR XVR +1/-17 db.

For sale (sale pending): Yaesu FT-2000 HF + 6 meters transceiver, 100

watt version.  The frequency display was replaced within the last year.

The rig comes with a Yaesu MH-31 hand mic and an external Yaesu SP8

speaker, now with fully functional high and low audio frequency filters.

The speaker is for transceiver audio only, i.e., the phone patch

circuitry is not connected.  I am also including an RF Space SDR IQ pan

display unit, installed and working.  The transceiver itself is fully

functional and in excellent condition.  Email me for pictures.  I am

lowering the price to $700 cash for local pickup. This equipment is from

my personal collection, and the proceeds will be used to offset the cost

of a new Yaesu System Fusion WIRES-X simplex node and room located at my

QTH. This system will be the first access point for world wide full C4FM

digital communication for hams in the Oriental and surrounding areas.
